Searching LIS blogs

Posted by watsonlibrary on October 29, 2006

Garrett Hungerford at Library Zen has brought up a nifty search engine for LIS blogs he calls LISZEN. His explanatory post is here:

I’ve been slaving away, taking links from LISWIKI and importing them to Google Co-op. The result is a custom search engine that sifts through 530 individual blogs.

Before you ask, he is taking submissions: I’ve already had a few additional submissions today, and I will continue to make this thing grow as longs as there are library bloggers around to power it. If your site is not in “the list”, email me, contact me, or post your submission in the comments. Anything goes; don’t let your blog go unheard!

If you don’t already have his blog in your Bloglines … why not?

Sharing PowerPoints

Posted by watsonlibrary on October 26, 2006

SlideShare is a new Web service that does for PowerPoints what Flickr does for photos or YouTube for videos.

That is, users can upload PowerPoint presentations, tag them with whatever terms they want, and make them available for others to view.

To sign up, you have to request an invitation on the SlideShare site. The invitation comes in your e-mail almost immediately, and then you’re free to search or browse the content on the site or upload your own PowerPoints.

I’ve only explored it briefly, looking, for example, for presentations with the word library or librarian. I’d be interested to hear what others think.

Is this yet another way, for example, to match Mindy’s presentation with the audio? Is there any particular benefit to making the PowerPoint presentations taggable and shareable?

Internet Librarian conference 2006

Posted by watsonlibrary on October 26, 2006

If you’ve been trolling Bloglines this week you’ve almost certainly come across a host of posts on the Internet Librarian 2006 conference going on in Monterey, California. Not surprisingly, it seems every participant is also simultaneously blogging the conference. Jennifer Macaulay (yaay, got it right this time!) has captured as many of these blogs as she could find and compiled a post of blogs. Mind you, reading the blogs aren’t particularly easy nor coherent, but sampling a few you quickly discover that most of us (both at the Met and in the larger library world) are on the same page, or at least in the same chapter of the same book. Some of the ideas we freely-associated at Wednesday’s meeting pop up as presentation fodder in Monterey.
For another approach, here’s a Technorati search I ran of “‘Internet Librarian’ 2006″. Or if you prefer, a Google Blog search.

Ross

UPDATE: Jeepers, how did I miss this? The Flickr! search of IL 2006. Or how about David Lee King’s simultaneous videoblogging of his talk about videoblogging at IL2006?

Almost live: podcasting from Watson Library

Posted by watsonlibrary on October 25, 2006

Halfway down the left side of the page you will see a new addition to this site:  a feed for Watson Library podcasts.  With just a pair of headphones, you can listen to our very first one, created in house and with minimal equipment: just click on the apple green box below.

Our second episode will be a reprisal Mindy’s talk she gave at last week’s Guild of Book Workers Conference.  The subject will be bookbinders in New York since the late 1950’s, with a focus on Guild-related people and activities.  Stay tuned!

Goldwater blog gets an alias

Posted by watsonlibrary on October 24, 2006

Just a little e-billet doux to let you know that the Goldwater Library blog now has an easier-to-remember address: http://www.goldwaterlibrary.org. There’s no need to change any of your links, the blog still resides at the previous address. There might be a little delay while the systems elves make this happen, but it should be fully functional by tomorrow morning. [Efficient little elves: It's working now!] So if you can hold your horses until then …

METRO course

Posted by watsonlibrary on October 19, 2006

Is anyone planning on attending the METRO course on Nov. 3 titled “Online Community and Libraries”?  Seems like at least 1 or 2 of us should go…

The link is too long and it messes up this blog space so I’m not including it here (anyone know how to break links on these posts but still make them work?), but here is the course description:

The library has historically been at the center of the community. With the advent of Web 2.0, a massive online community has arisen. How can libraries use social software tools to connect with their patrons? What can libraries start doing today to increase their value to the online community? This session discusses ways in which libraries can use emerging tools to build online community as well as practical tips for how libraries can “go where the users are” and participate in developing knowledge communities.

Objectives
* Learn how to build a library’s community virtually.
* Understand how to use emerging technology tools to build library community.
* Learn methods for getting started in integrating technology tools in online library community building.

Presenter: Ellyssa Kroski is a Reference Librarian at Columbia University as well as an independent Information Consultant. She has worked with Information and Internet technologies for over 10 years. Ellyssa teaches professional development seminars, writes a successful blog called InfoTangle, and is a speaker at national conferences. She holds an MLIS from Long Island University.

Is there a “journalist” in the house?

Posted by watsonlibrary on October 18, 2006

I was just asking Ken whether for our next Watson Library Newsletter we should have a brief article on Outreach 3 /Web 2.0 and he thought yes.

And he thought someone from the group should write it, so are there any volunteers?  I think the article should be just a few paragraphs outlining what we’re working on, why and how.

If you’re game, let me know.  Copy deadline is October 31.  Our prior newsletter is at http://intranet/Hazen/Newsletter/TJW%20News%206.doc

The new stuff

Posted by lipcan3 on October 13, 2006

I’ve created a new page for an intro to 2.0 called “start here.”

Also: added a search box widget.

Also: added a section of our links called “tools” linking to our various Outreach accounts and resources. Down on the right sidebar.

Feel free to edit any and all.

Wiki is a go

Posted by watsonlibrary on October 12, 2006

John & I have set up the wiki. View, edit, and sign up for training groups here: http://watsonlibrary.pbwiki.com/

The login is watsonlibrary and the password is outreach if you want to edit, or create your own pbwiki identity here: https://my.pbwiki.com/. Editing the wiki using your own identity will not identify which passages you have authored, except in the history.

10/11 meeting report

Posted by watsonlibrary on October 11, 2006

Here’s some quick notes on this afternoon’s meeting. Additions and revisions welcome.

Attending: Lisa, John, Angela, Nancy Cochran, Meg, Erika, Min, Linda, Anna, Michael Carter, Jennie, Robyn, Vicky, Tavia, Dan, Renee, Deborah, Nancy Mandel, Vika.

Key tools identified: Blogs; RSS; Wikis (featuring Wikipedia); podcasts; social networking & tagging (Flikr, LibraryThing, and public library catalogs with user-generated cataloging). Additional tools: Citesulike, Writely & Writeboard (see del.icio.us page for links)

Next step: Teams of 2 or 3 to self-identify for the key tools, research, and present at next meeting, in about 2 weeks.

There were some questions about the usefulness of Flikr for curators; Michael pointed out that it’s a source for architectural images, and Linda noted that they’re accustomed to collecting images. Deborah pointed out the possibility of the universe of users helping to identify images.

Lisa reminded us that we will want to focus on how these tools can help researchers — Tavia added the word “facilitate.”
